Bradley, Jolene, James and I were able to take a guided hike through Halawa Valley while Mimi and Papa watched all of the kids. We knew it was more than an average hike when Josh, our guide, explained how we would be participating in the Hawaiian protocol of entering someone's property by blowing in a Conch Shell, singing who we are and where we are from, then bringing a gift once Josh's father answered back that we can enter. It was so interesting to learn about Molokai's history and the Hawaiian culture while walking through such a beautiful valley. And to top it all off we got to jump in the fresh water springs under the waterfall when we got to the end!
Right in front of their house they are working to restore the valley to how it was for their ancestors. Just 60 years ago there were no trees at all in the valley, just fields of taro plants (to make poi) and houses.
